A guide for drivers from Türkiye

Your next driving lesson after moving from Türkiye

You may be moving from Türkiye with a driving licence, learning for the first time or returning to driving after a break. Choose your next step using your own documents and experience. Check the official licence route separately from residence questions, then look for clear instruction and a learning plan built around the skills you need.

Your licence issuer, its validity and your circumstances determine the rules, rather than your nationality.

Check exchange or Dutch exams

Plan your Dutch licence route early

For a valid licence issued outside the EU/EFTA, the ordinary resident driving period is the first 185 days after relocation. That period is not extended by a pending exchange application.

This issuing country is not on the ordinary RDW exchange list. Check whether an exception applies, such as an approved Expat Scheme decision or a qualifying former Dutch licence. Working in the Netherlands alone does not establish eligibility. If you cannot exchange, both Dutch theory and practical tests are required.

Separate residence advice from the driving licence check

Advice about moving, working or living in the Netherlands does not answer whether your driving licence can be used or exchanged. Keep these checks separate. Tell the school which country issued your document and whether you have already checked the official RDW information for your circumstances.

Do not assume that a Turkish passport means a Turkish-issued licence, or that another person's successful exchange determines your route. If an official exception may apply, clarify it before paying for a full exam programme. An assessment lesson can help with skills, but it does not resolve a document requirement.

Agree on a shared language for useful feedback

You might prefer lessons in English, Dutch or Turkish. Confirm what the particular school and instructor can actually provide. A school's name or the background of its customers does not guarantee a teaching language. Ask how instructions, explanations and feedback will be handled throughout the programme.

If you already have driving experience, ask for more than a general judgement that your driving is good or needs work. Useful feedback identifies specific observation, positioning or priority decisions. Practise explaining what you noticed and why you chose a manoeuvre, using language you can comfortably follow while driving.

  • Can the actual instructor teach in my preferred language?
  • How will specific driving decisions be explained and reviewed?
  • Will I receive a clear summary of what to improve?

Build the programme around your next goal

If you are a beginner, ask how the school introduces vehicle control before combining it with busier traffic situations. If you already drive, explain your recent experience and the kind of journeys you expect here. Those are better starting points than selecting a package solely by the number of lessons advertised.

For an exam route, ask what is included in preparation and what is charged separately. For refresher lessons, agree which skills the sessions are intended to improve and when to review progress. Compare lesson length, car type and written terms so that similarly named packages do not hide different amounts of teaching.

Understand every step

Learning in English, with clarity.

Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. Confirm lesson language with the school before you book, including how your instructor will explain road situations and give feedback.

Explore driving schools

Your lessons

Ask for an instructor who can teach in English. Discuss your experience and learning goals, rather than assuming a school offers your preferred language.

Your theory test

The CBR car theory test is available in English. Check the current booking and language options on the CBR website.

Your practical test

Agree language arrangements with your school in advance. Do not assume an English-speaking examiner; a practical-test interpreter must meet the CBR conditions.

A fair comparison

Look beyond the lesson price

A lower advertised price is only useful when you know what it covers. Ask each school for a written quote you can compare on the same basis.

01Time behind the wheel
Check the lesson duration and whether it includes pick-up or travel time. Compare an equal number of minutes, rather than the word “lesson”.
02What the quote includes
Ask about assessment lessons, learning materials, exam booking and use of the car during a test. Check which charges are separate.
03Flexibility and your car
Confirm manual or automatic, lesson cancellation terms, package expiry and refunds. Choose a realistic schedule before committing to a package.

Before you get started

A few useful answers

Do residence arrangements establish my licence exchange rights?

Treat them as separate checks. Use the official driving licence conditions for your issuing document and personal situation. A residence or work arrangement alone is not a reliable answer about driving or exchange.

Can I find Turkish-speaking instructors through this guide?

You can use Rijmaatje to explore schools, then ask them about the language you prefer. This guide does not guarantee Turkish-speaking instructors or infer language availability from a school's name.

Should an experienced driver choose a beginner package?

First clarify your licence route and request an assessment. Your plan may need to address particular Dutch traffic situations, broader exam preparation or more basic skills. Ask the school to explain its recommendation.

Can I arrange English lessons through every school on Rijmaatje?

Language availability is set by each school. Contact the school before booking and confirm that your instructor can explain lessons and feedback in English. Also agree how language will be handled during test preparation and the practical test.
