Check exchange or Dutch exams
Plan your Dutch licence route early
For a valid licence issued outside the EU/EFTA, the ordinary resident driving period is the first 185 days after relocation. That period is not extended by a pending exchange application.
This issuing country is not on the ordinary RDW exchange list. Check whether an exception applies, such as an approved Expat Scheme decision or a qualifying former Dutch licence. Working in the Netherlands alone does not establish eligibility. If you cannot exchange, both Dutch theory and practical tests are required.
Start with the licence issued by your state
US driving licences are issued by states. When asking about driving or exchange in the Netherlands, identify the issuing state and the type of licence you hold. Saying only that you are American can leave out the document details needed to check your situation properly.
A US licence does not by itself establish that you can exchange it. Check the official conditions and any applicable exception before a school builds an exam package around you. If you are a complete beginner, say so directly; an overseas address or nationality does not indicate driving experience.
Learn the decisions behind unfamiliar road layouts
Being comfortable with a car does not make every road system familiar. Discuss the layouts or rules you find uncertain, such as priority at a junction, cycle crossings or choosing a lane through a roundabout. Ask the instructor to explain the local rule instead of relying on a comparison with an American intersection.
Use the assessment to identify habits that transfer well and situations that need work. If your new routine includes city streets, motorway entries or narrow residential roads, tell the school. Lessons should prepare you to read an unfamiliar situation independently, rather than memorise one route near the school.
- Ask how priority and cycle crossings will be practised.
- Explain your likely journeys without requesting a guaranteed test route.
- Agree which driving decisions you should explain aloud.
Make your vehicle preference explicit
If most of your experience is in an automatic, mention that when discussing manual lessons. Learning clutch control at the same time as a new traffic environment may change your learning plan. Equally, experienced manual drivers can ask for an assessment in the type of car they intend to use.
Ask for feedback and a revised estimate after the assessment, rather than assuming your years of driving translate into a set number of lessons. Compare written prices in euros, with lesson minutes and exam-related services separated. Confirm that the actual instructor, not just the person answering enquiries, can teach in English.
Understand every step
Learning in English, with clarity.
Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. Confirm lesson language with the school before you book, including how your instructor will explain road situations and give feedback.
Explore driving schoolsYour lessons
Ask for an instructor who can teach in English. Discuss your experience and learning goals, rather than assuming a school offers your preferred language.
Your theory test
The CBR car theory test is available in English. Check the current booking and language options on the CBR website.
Your practical test
Agree language arrangements with your school in advance. Do not assume an English-speaking examiner; a practical-test interpreter must meet the CBR conditions.
A fair comparison
Look beyond the lesson price
A lower advertised price is only useful when you know what it covers. Ask each school for a written quote you can compare on the same basis.
- 01Time behind the wheel
- Check the lesson duration and whether it includes pick-up or travel time. Compare an equal number of minutes, rather than the word “lesson”.
- 02What the quote includes
- Ask about assessment lessons, learning materials, exam booking and use of the car during a test. Check which charges are separate.
- 03Flexibility and your car
- Confirm manual or automatic, lesson cancellation terms, package expiry and refunds. Choose a realistic schedule before committing to a package.

A few useful answers
Does holding a US licence automatically allow an exchange?
No automatic exchange should be assumed. Check the official route for your licence and any relevant exception. The issuing document matters; citizenship alone does not settle the question.
Can an experienced American driver take refresher lessons?
You can discuss targeted refresher instruction with a school. First establish your current entitlement to drive. Refresher lessons develop skills; they do not extend that entitlement or replace a required licence procedure.
How do I compare schools that propose different lesson counts?
Ask each school which skills its estimate covers, when progress is reviewed and how long each lesson lasts. An explained learning plan is more informative than comparing package sizes alone.
Can I arrange English lessons through every school on Rijmaatje?
Language availability is set by each school. Contact the school before booking and confirm that your instructor can explain lessons and feedback in English. Also agree how language will be handled during test preparation and the practical test.
