Your new home. Your next road.

Driving lessons for expats in the Netherlands

Your next chapter starts here. Whether you are learning from scratch or bringing years of experience, find your route to Dutch roads, understand your licence options and compare driving schools with confidence.

A familiar starting point

Where are you moving from?

Find advice for your journey, from your first Dutch lesson to a confident return to the road. Choose a guide, then check the rules for the country that issued your licence.

One destination. Different beginnings.

Start with what you need

New to driving

Build your skills from the beginning. Ask a school about lesson language, theory preparation and a learning plan that fits your weekly routine.

Find your first school

Bringing a foreign licence

Check whether you can drive on it, exchange it or need Dutch tests. Your licence issuer and personal situation set the route.

Check the RDW rules

Ready for a refresher

Already licensed and entitled to drive here? An assessment lesson can help you focus on Dutch junctions, cycling infrastructure and confidence.

Compare local schools

Understand every step

Learning in English, with clarity.

Feeling comfortable asking questions matters. Confirm lesson language with the school before you book, including how your instructor will explain road situations and give feedback.

Explore driving schools

Your lessons

Ask for an instructor who can teach in English. Discuss your experience and learning goals, rather than assuming a school offers your preferred language.

Your theory test

The CBR car theory test is available in English. Check the current booking and language options on the CBR website.

Your practical test

Agree language arrangements with your school in advance. Do not assume an English-speaking examiner; a practical-test interpreter must meet the CBR conditions.

A fair comparison

Look beyond the lesson price

A lower advertised price is only useful when you know what it covers. Ask each school for a written quote you can compare on the same basis.

01Time behind the wheel
Check the lesson duration and whether it includes pick-up or travel time. Compare an equal number of minutes, rather than the word “lesson”.
02What the quote includes
Ask about assessment lessons, learning materials, exam booking and use of the car during a test. Check which charges are separate.
03Flexibility and your car
Confirm manual or automatic, lesson cancellation terms, package expiry and refunds. Choose a realistic schedule before committing to a package.

Before you get started

A few useful answers

Can I take driving lessons in English in the Netherlands?

Ask the individual school whether it offers lessons in English and whether the instructor can explain feedback clearly in that language. Being listed on Rijmaatje does not confirm English availability. Arrange the language before booking.

Can I exchange my foreign driving licence?

This depends on the country that issued it, the document and your circumstances. Some licences can be exchanged under the ordinary RDW rules; others may qualify through a specific exception. Read the RDW conditions before choosing a full driving course.

How many lessons will I need?

There is no reliable number that fits every learner. Your experience, assessment lesson, choice of car and time between lessons all matter. Ask for a plan with progress reviews and a clear explanation of the costs.

Does a verified profile confirm English lessons?

No. Verification and lesson language are separate matters. Read the profile information and ask the school to confirm the language, instructor availability and practical-test arrangements directly.

Go straight to the source

Official rules. A clearer next step.

RDW sets the foreign-licence and exchange conditions; CBR explains the tests. Check the full rules for your own document and situation.
